Home Tour: Our Foyer

Today's home tour post includes a peek at our foyer...err, well lack thereof is more like it.  We live in a small ranch.  Under 1400 square feet so a foyer was the last thing in the builders mind for space issues.  This is one area that I can't even figure out where to begin to make some updates so I'm looking to you, my readers to give me some options on what you think would work in the foyer.  So, take a look at my pics and please post your pinterest pins, blog posts where you have a similar foyer, or any other links that you think might make our foyer work.  I'm looking for cheap purchases that make a great impact to the small space.

Here's a view from the front door looking into our house.  You're looking at a closet door straight ahead.  Design flaw I think.

The terrible light that hangs in the foyer.  That's an easy quick fix, we just need to find a light we like that will modernize the foyer a bit.

If you step just inside the door, to the left, behind the front door is the door to the garage. See that ugly maroon door?  My plan is to paint the front door a fun blue color.

This is the view as you step inside the door from the garage.  I hate how messy it looks in that corner.

Finally the view from the living room to the front door.

So, here's where you come in.  We need serious design help and I need your thoughts on making this small area more useful on the cheap.

PS.  You can check out other areas of our home tour including; our mantle, our bathrooms, our bedroom, Adalyn's nursery, and our kitchen.

  1. just stopping by Kellys Korner and that corners great for holding coats and things! it's hard to decorate with storage furniture with the floor vent i imagine. you could buy a piece of molding from the hardware store and add hooks to it like this

then put a small short cabinet on the floor to the right of the vent to put things out of sight like cleaners etc?

not sure what your style is. just things that came to mind! =)

    1. I've seen the ledge before and I love it. I'm trying to find some type of cubby I could put in that corner that would make sense for the space so I definitely like that idea. Thanks for the input.

  2. I feel your "no foyer" pain. Our house was built in 1910. The front door opens directly into the middle of our family room, and there are no closets on the first floor. We have about 2 1/2 feet of wall space beside our front door for all of our foyer-type stuff like shoes, keys, dog leashes, etc. I'm jealous of your closet and foyer, even if it is small.

I bought an Expedit shelving unit from Ikea. It has eight square shelves (two across, four high) and fits perfectly in the tiny space beside the door. I bought four straw open-top boxes for the upper four shelves. They house our hats, scarves, gloves, son's coats & shoes, dog leashes, and whatever else is convenient to have by the door. We keep our shoes in the two lowest shelves. It's not ideal, but shoes are still by the door, and I'm not constantly picking up shoes to vacuum. The two lower-middle shelves house my purse, our diaper bag, and DH's work bag.

Maybe a similar shelf would work in your corner. You can even find shelves that mount directly on the wall, so it wouldn't be sitting over your heating vent. A shelving unit would give you storage for backpacks, purses, and toddler items.

I like your coat rack, but it doesn't seem to be big enough. If you'd rather hang your coats on a rack instead of in the closet, you might want to look at a freestanding coat rack.

If you want to give the foyer a little more pizzazz, you could add some white crown molding at the ceiling. Matching white door molding kits around the doors & closet would give the area a a nice, finished look.

    1. Luckily we have a decent sized closet where we can store our coats, gloves, hats, etc. I'm thinking some type of shelving unit would work and I love the Expedit's from Ikea. I wonder if they'll fit against that wall. I'll look into that. Regarding the crown molding, I love crown molding. Seriously, love! The problem is we have vaulted ceilings and I dont know how that would look. I need to check into that. Great feedback, thanks for commenting.

  4. We also have a small foyer (I blogged about it way back in July for this SUYL!) so I feel your small-foyer-pain. The only suggestion I have is to get baskets for the top of the shelf where the coats hang. If you put items in there instead of directly on the shelf, it would look less messy. I'm a huge fan of storing mess in baskets :)

I really like the artwork hanging above the light switches but I would put something bigger there. It would draw attention to that space but hopefully not look too cluttered. I have no other suggestions because I am just not great at design. Sorry.

As you can tell, I'm slowly catching up on my SUYL reading :)
