Post Pregnancy Body

39 week bump photo.  Hours before delivery.

I can't believe what I'm about to do but I think it's something a lot of people who are expecting babies are thinking.  I mean, I thought it throughout my entire pregnancy.  What is my body going to look like after having this baby?  Will I bounce back?  How long will it take?  This being my second, will things be totally different this go round?  Some of these questions I have answers to now and some I probably won't have for months to come.

When I got home from the hospital, after settling in for a day or so, I decided to hop on the scale out of curiosity.  To my disappointment I had only lost about 10 lbs.  I delivered a nearly 8lb baby, plus all that other good stuff, and I had only lost 10lbs?!  How was that possible?  That was my initial reaction but I only let that thought run through my head for a few minutes because that was the least of my concerns.  What I did next was even crazier...
I took photos of my post pregnancy body just days after delivery.  Oi what a sight but I'm all about seeing progress photos.  If I don't see the proof of the change, I don't believe anything is happening.  One of my most popular posts are my 30 day shred progress photos and I loved taking them and seeing the changes from those so I wanted to do the same here.

Just a week later and you can see a lot of change already.  I haven't been cleared to work out yet so this is only chasing around a toddler and breastfeeding.  Once I get the all clear to work out I'm hitting the crunches big time.  Along with running and 30 day shred, I'm hoping to get toned up as soon as possible.  To this point I've lost 20 pounds and have another 12 to go before I get to my pre-pregnancy weight.  I don't plan to stop there.  My goal is another 20 after I lose that pregnancy weight.  But one goal at a time.  Hopefully in the next few weeks I can post about how I've lost the rest of the baby weight!

One with clothes on is needed I think.  :)

How did you lose your baby weight?  Was there any tried and true methods that worked for you?  Going into holiday season I'm a little nervous but confident if I keep at it I can reach my goals in time for spring season!

Healthy Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

I found this recipe on Pinterest, well sort of.  The picture I pinned looked good and the details were in the description so I pinned it before I actually clicked back to the site.  Of course, once I get there the recipe is for an entirely different cookie that didn't seem easy or contain ingredients I had on hand.  So I decided to take the description from the picture and changed it a little for what I thought might taste good.  After calculating out the calories for the amount of cookies you can make, these are just under 100 calories each!

Ingredients
2 ripe bananas
1 heaping tablespoon peanut butter
1 cup quick oats
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1/4 cup brown sugar

Smash the bananas until they're smooth, add the peanut butter and smooth until creamy.  Add the oats, chocolate chips and brown sugar and mix until fully combined.  Scoop by the spoonful onto a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 15 minutes.

If you're like me, I like my cookies with a sprinkling of salt on the top so I lightly salted mine.  These are best the same day and still warm.  The next day they're good but get a little gooey.

Healthy & Tasty Black Bean Salad

A family friend made this great light black bean salad to one of our family functions and I was dying over the taste.  It's amazing so I had to ask for the recipe.  I finally got it and have to share with you because it's amazeballs (love you Bethenny)!  I had a craving for something healthy but also something that actually fills me up and satisfies my hunger.  This is it.

30 Day Shred Update: Level One Complete

As you know I've begun 30 day shred.  Unfortunately, with travel and life happening I haven't been able to be super consistent working out every day as the program is designed for.  I've completed level one and here are my results.

And for a side by side comparison, here is my initial picture and after level two completed.  I can see a small difference in my waist area and a little in my legs.
And the side comparison shots.  You can notice the difference in my stomach in this shot.
And my level one results on paper.

Arms - 12" both arms (no change)
Bust - 37 3/4" (down by 1/4")
Thighs - 23.5" (down by 1/2")
Upper waist - 32.5" (down by 1/2")
Lower waist - 35" (no change)
Hips - 40.5" (down by 1/2")

Total change - down by 1 3/4" which is great since I've been on and off a little with my workouts.  I do need to mention that I didn't see a change in my weight so I decided to pick up running.  Running has been the only way I've ever lost weight so I'll show you my results from running and include that number in future posts.  Remember, everyone's bodies are different and react differently to workouts so you may see the scale change with the 30 day shred.

I'll be posting my thoughts on the level two workout as I approach the last few days of the program.  Overall, I'm pretty happy with the changes I'm seeing in my pictures.  Have any of you started 30 day shred or have progression pictures?  If so, I'd love to see and feature them.

Read more about my 30 day shred here and here.

30 Day Shred Update

A couple weeks ago I, very nervously, posted pictures of myself for all the world to see.  I decided to start 30 day shred after several mommy friends suggested it to tone up in a short amount of time without having to spend "hours of phoning it in at the gym".  I'll be honest, as soon as I posted that I thought what did you just do.  Now anyone can see what I look like.  It's a really scary feeling knowing it's out there.  Coworkers, former boyfriends, former classmates, strangers, etc.  It's such a scary feeling but you all came out and offered a lot of support and encouragement.  I want to make sure I provide you with an update so you can see my progress as well as use this as a tool to keep me motivated.

So first let me tell you where I am in the program.  Remember I told you that 30 day shred is a 3 level program, each level lasting 10 days.  I began level 1 weeks ago, then, our entire family was in a wedding and the following day we headed off to Outerbanks for a vacation.  So I made it all the way through level 1 and then unfortunately stopped because of everything else going on at the time.

After returning from vacation, I gave myself one day off and then immediately started right back up on Monday.  I'm now 3 days in and Jillian is still kicking my butt but I'm feeling amazing.  Each level is about 20 minutes of intense working out and you feel like quitting several times in those short 20 minutes but I push through it thinking it's only 20 minutes and Jillian looks like a beast.

So here's my initial reaction to completing level one (and restarting again).  Day 1 and 2 are brutal.  My legs hurt so bad that I could hardly walk.  I could barely lift my arms to answer my phone.  But then you start feeling really good after those initial few days.  Honestly, I started seeing my stomach tighten up after around day 5.  The hardest part for me is the push-ups.  I have zero upper body strength, which is really shocking considering I carry a 25 baby around daily.

My plan at this point is to run through level 1 again, take some progression photos once completed and provide you with my update at that point.  Then, I'll start level 2, photos & update, level 3, photos & update until it's complete.  And figures crossed I'll have some fabulous results for you.  I ask that you continue to provide me with support and encouraging words because I know I'll need them.  Also, if any of you have done 30 day shred and want to provide me with your story/photos, I'll post about it.  I'd love to hear about you progress/results.

30 Day Shred...

I can't believe what I'm about to do.  As you're all aware, I have an almost 20 month old daughter, Adalyn.  If you're a woman who has given birth you know what that does to your body.  You're loose where you shouldn't be loose.  You eat what you can when you can because your priority is to feed your child when they're hungry.  Oftentimes that means you're eating something terrible for you just because it's easy.  Having a child also leaves you with little time for yourself.

One of the things I was really afraid of prior to having Addie was losing my sense of self.  Being and individual as well as a mommy.  Unfortunately, I've lost sight of that and am now in a place where I have to make a change.  My favorite mantra, Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes.

So, I've decided to start working out again.  On Monday, I started 30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels.  It's a 30 day program you do for 20 minutes each day.  Within the program are 3 levels of intensity.  Level one for 10 days, level two for 10 days, level three for 10 days.  After than you're expected to see some results.  I've heard people losing 10 pounds in that amount of time which is a lot considering it's only 20 minutes a day.

The motivation is that I'm ready to start planning for another baby and it's proven that being fit going into a pregnancy means a healthier you throughout the pregnancy as well as an easier bounce back post delivery.  Plus I want to look good.  I recently turned 30 and they say your body goes down hill at this age so I'm here to combat that.  I'm also battling a family full of obesity which is something I can't let myself do.

The plan is to eat better and workout every day for 30 days (I do have a vacation in between so I'll need to figure something out while at the beach).  After 30 days I'll continue to do the program or find another activity to keep me in shape, I may switch back to running as it's great cardio and has really been the only thing I've done to change my body.

Now before we get into the ugly details, here's what I'm hoping for out of this.  I'm hoping that I feel better about myself but also that I see some serious results.  I've always had some serious thighs so that's my target area for change.  If I see less kissing in thigh area I'll be really happy.

So here it comes, ladies and gents, brace yourself for the ugly truth.

Starting Details
Weight 157
Arms - 12"
Thigh - 24"
Upper Waist - 33"
Lower Waist - 35"
Hips - 41"

So I'm asking for your help.  Your advice, easy lunches, and healthy dinners.  Meals with lots of flavor but low in calories.  Have you done 30 Day Shred?  What was your story? What were your results?

My Pregnancy Journey

I've told you all about our life with Adalyn over the past 7 months the blog has been up.  What I haven't told you is our pregnancy journey and how we got our sweet Adalyn.  So let's take it back to the beginning.  (Be prepared, this is going to be long).

Rick and I were married in 2006.  After 2 years of marriage we were ready to start the pregnancy process in December of 2008.  We started trying for a baby in December and by my annual check up in May, we still weren't pregnant.  After a conversation at the annual check up with my OBGYN I had a very frustrating conversation with her.  I was 26 years old so, I thought, there was no reason we weren't getting pregnant.  Just one month later, in June, I took a pregnancy test when I thought I might be pregnant, sure enough, I was.  I couldn't be more excited.  That's all Rick and I talked about, but I told him I didn't want to tell anyone yet.  I wanted to wait until closer to the second trimester, to keep the secret just to us for the time being.

Almost 2 months later, before my first pre-natal appointment, I woke up with severe cramping.  I went to the bathroom and found out I was bleeding pretty heavily.  I called my OB and was told to come into their office for a  check that morning.  By the time I reached the office, I had passed the embryo.  My OB confirmed this with an ultrasound.  She told us miscarriages are more common than most people realize.  10-15% of pregnancies end in miscarriage and most times there's no reason.  She saw no reason for me to miscarry and thought the next pregnancy would go smoothly.  She suggested that we take 2 months physically to let my body recover.  Emotionally, it was up to us, whenever we were ready.

The next couple weeks were difficult for me.  It was all a blur and I was just coasting.  I knew I wanted a baby badly and I didn't want to wait long.  We started trying again in September and immediately found out we were pregnant again.  This time, we made it 6 weeks before I miscarried again.  Again, my doctor confirmed my body passed the embryo and a D&C wasn't necessary.  Again she told us she didn't see any reason why the miscarriage happened, my uterus was in good shape, my age was perfect, etc.  This time, though, she scheduled me for a procedure called a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) at the local hospital.

A HSG is an outpatient procedure that takes about 30 minutes.  It's non-invasive and involves placing an iodine-based dye through the cervix and then taking x-rays to determine the shape of the uterus and determine if the fallopian tubes are open or blocked.  The procedure was done while I was awake and talking with my doctor.  There is no anesthesia, only a pain killer is used in order to help with the discomfort.  Cramping can occur which feels just like your period but it's a pretty uncomfortable procedure.  While she was injecting the cannula and dye into me, all I could think was this is really uncomfortable.  I was so uncomfortable that I forgot that she would be giving me results which could change my life, in a matter of minutes.

She told me that everything looked fine and again chalked it up to something that just happens.  By this point, Rick had become frustrated and so had I, though him more so.  It's difficult to have no answer to digest.  She told us again, to try whenever we were ready.  In December 2009, I found out I was pregnant.  Again, we kept everything quiet and again, I was nervous about it all.  I didn't want to think about being pregnant for fear of what may be about to happen.  In January 2010, I miscarried my third pregnancy. This time, it was determined to be an ectopic pregnancy and was potentially life threatening.

An ectopic pregnancy occurs outside of the uterus and the baby cannot survive.  Typically, an ectopic pregnancy occurs when a pregnancy starts outside of the uterus, usually in within one of the fallopian tubes.  They occur in 1 - 2.5% of all pregnancies and I didn't fit into any of the categories in which an ectopic pregnancy usually happens.  As I mentioned, an ectopic pregnancy must be ended in order to save the mother's life.  If the area of the pregnancy ruptures, the mother must be treated immediately in order to prevent death (which is rare).  Luckily, I had not gotten to the point of concern for rupture, though my doctor informed me that I could not continue the pregnancy.  In order to fully stop the pregnancy I was given methotrexate and monitored my quantitative HCG blood levels to ensure the methotrexate "took".

This was difficult for me, each time you miscarry your  chart is noted with a spontaneous abortion tally.  For someone who is very pro-life, to even see the word abortion on my file was tough to take in, but to see it 3 times made me very sad.  At this point my OB knew there was absolutely something else taking place that needed to be solved.  She referred me to a reproductive endocrinologist (RE), to determine why I was able to easily get pregnant but was unable to carry the pregnancies.  I wasn't very optimistic by this point but knew I absolutely could not stop until I knew whether or not I would ever have children.

In March, I saw the RE and had a sonohysterogram (HSN) scheduled.  A HSN is an outpatient ultrasound which can determine if there are abnormalities inside the uterus that could interfere with pregnancy.  The procedure involves inserting saline into the uterus so the uterus is full and then the ultrasound is performed.  The way this was described to me was your uterus is like a collapsed balloon, a normal ultrasound is often hard to see because of the "deflated balloon", whereas the HSN is a procedure where the "balloon" is inflated and all of the walls are easily viewable.  Much like the HSG procedure, there was some cramping and discomfort but the procedure was pretty easy.  Again, like the HSG, it was determined my uterus looked fabulous.  Great news, right?  Well yes, but still the question is why can't I carry a baby?

The RE had a full blood work done on Rick and I.    I think I counted 25 viles of blood taken to be tested.  Various test ran, which I can't even tell you because there were so many.  The RE was confident these test would help solve our mystery.  Several weeks later, we were called back into the office with our test results.  Rick's came back clean.  Mine, not so much.  NOTE:  This is about to get overwhelming to understand so stick with me.

It was determined I had several issue which could be the cause for recurrent miscarriages.  I have heterozygous methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase gene abnormality (MTHFR) meaning one of my parents passed this on to me.  I also have a heterozygous plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1), again, one of my parents passed this onto me.  Lastly, I have a protein S deficiency which was determine to be the primary cause for miscarriage.  The interesting piece of all of this is these levels can increase or decrease over your life.  With all the hormone changes while pregnant, these numbers can really spike or fall and would affect the pregnancy.

So if you've made it this far, your probably overwhelmed.  I was too.  I think Rick and I sat in that office with a dumbstruck look on our faces.  All of this medical talk and we had no idea what it all meant.  The doctor was able to break it down a bit for us.  I am a thrombophiliac meaning I develop blood clots due to an abnormality (in my case abnormalities) in the system of coagulation (forming semisolid lumps in a liquid).  So every time I was pregnant, my body would clot the embryo causing a miscarriage.  Finally, we had our answer and a solution. The RE told us the way for me to carry to term was to offset my bodies natural reaction to clot during pregnancy by taking a blood thinner called Lovenox.  The scary thing, I had to inject myself at the same time daily, in the stomach throughout my entire pregnancy

In April 2010, we began trying to get pregnant and found out in May I was pregnant.  We began testing my HCG levels to ensure the levels were doubling over a period of time.  When this was confirmed, I began my daily Lovenox injections.  Again, I wanted to keep this all a secret.  At this point, I was confident everything would be fine but I was still nervous I would miscarry again.  I didn't want to talk about the pregnancy for fear I would get excited and would start planning the nursery, baby names, etc all for it to end badly again.

12 week ultrasound

In August 2010, I made it through the first trimester.  I was ecstatic!  I had graduated from my bi-weekly ultrasounds with the RE and was being passed back to my OB for continued care through my pregnancy.  My RE explained that at the 36 week mark I would stop the Lovenox and be switched to Heparin injections twice a day (12 hours apart).  Heparin has a shorter life span than Lovenox.  In the event I went into labor, I would not be able to have an epidural until the blood thinner was completely out of my system.  Heparin can also be reversed whereas Lovenox cannot.  I've never been so happy to be back at my OB for continued treatment.

After my first visit with my OB, at 13 weeks pregnant, we told our family we were pregnant.  I was finally able to be excited about the pregnancy and was able to enjoy the next 27 weeks.  The remainder of my pregnancy went smoothly.  My OB kept saying, you deserve a smooth pregnancy after everything you've been through to this point.  I could not agree more.

We're 3 days away from our baby girls birthday.  It's been 3 year since our journey began and I could not be happier for the result.  Stay tuned tomorrow for the birth story.
